Spring 2021 Update

Things may seem like they have been all quiet on the mining front – but they haven’t!

The Hauraki Coromandel is more at risk from multinational miners today than it has been since the 1980’s…

We have been working hard to continue to keep the pressure on the Government to honour the promise they made back in 2017 that there would be no new mine on Conservation land.

Have you signed our petition yet?

We have also been working hard behind the scenes – most recently we have signed with a new digital platform that will enable us to have much better communication with our supporters, and to manage our membership better! It may seem like a small thing, but to a grass roots group like ours, it’s a revolution! Why not try it out by joining now?

We have had some actions – a roadside demonstration at Easter at Hikuai, where we know Oceana are now drilling, our people in Hahei found Oceana staff exploring a local farm, and sent them a clear message that they aren’t welcome there either! We have submitted on various local and central Government proposals, and continue to monitor what Oceana and other gold miners are doing – and how our various Government departments manage them – i.e. DOC access rights. We have met with the Waikato Conservation Board to ensure that they understand what our concerns are – and that they are ready to respond to any mining consents when they come up.

We have had meetings with various communities and individuals, been available for school talks and to speak with other community groups.

We have also been doing what we can to keep abreast of Oceana’s plans to mine at Wharekirauponga – reviewing the information they provide to their shareholders, media releases and international developments, and doing what we can to ensure that we are as prepared as we can be to respond when they do apply for those resource consents.

We have followed with interest the Financial Markets Authority decision to  file civil proceedings in the High Court against Matthew Hill, CE of New Talisman mining, the company that are trying to reopen the mine on Mt Karangahake. Mr Hill has been caught trying to manipulate the market to bolster the share price of New Talisman. We will keep you updated on that.

We are about to embark on a big fundraising drive, to help us to continue to mount a fight against Oceana at Wharekirauponga and to ensure that we can continue to do the vital work we do – to keep being able to employ our part time coordinator and to give us some certainty going forward around what we can (and can’t) do to protect this special place, Te Waka o Hauraki, from any more destructive mining. If you want to be part of, why not become a sustaining donor today (even $5 p/week helps heaps!)….
