Yesterday, the Governmnet announced their plans to amend the Crown Minerals Act to reflect their pro mining stance.
As expected, but none the less still shockingly, the Ammendment Bill looks to overturn the oil and gas bans put in place under the previous Government as part of the effort to move to renewable energy.
Sadly, it also seeks to change the ‘Purpose’ of the Act, giving it a role of promotion, rather than management; and giving the Minister the primary function to ‘attract permit applications’.
In a worrying new development, the Bill also aims to establish a framework for the Minister to develop National Policy Statements on specific minerals, to “set out the priorities and focus areas for a particular Government.” These can apply to specific minerals (1 or more), geographical areas and activities.
They are also looking to make it easier for people to do ‘hobby’ or other non-commercial mining, by establishing a new class of permit (Tier 3).
Also unsurprising but nevertheless shocking – we have all been given a mere 4 days to consider these proposed change and submit to what will be a truncated Select Committee process. Yet another example of the current Government not following due process, not facilitating any meaningful public engagement and generally showing scant regard for Aotearoa New Zealands democratic processes!
