Several exploration permits within the Coromandel have recently had area extensions granted.
The extensive permit held at Broken Hills has had a significant area added, and permits at both Whenuakite and Kuaotunu (respectively on either side of Whitianga, one of the most popular destinations on the Peninsula) have also had new area added – some of it including Conservation land. All have been granted to gold mining company Oceana Gold. This is despite the “No new mines” announcement in the first 100 days speech from the Minister of Conservation.
It is an understatement to say that we are disappointed to see these extensions granted.
